Atlanta is a major southern city and the capital of the state of Georgia. Forty percent of Georgia's people (40 people of every 100) live in the Atlanta area.
The city was founded in1837 in north-western Georgia. It was named Terminus, because it was at the end, or terminus, of a new railroad. In 1845, it became Atlanta. In 1864, during the Civil War, Atlanta was almostcompletely destroyed by Northern armies. But it was soon rebuilt, and in 1868 it was made Georgia's capital.
Today, people from Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina come to Atlanta to shop or to dobusiness. Hartsfield International Airport is one of the busiest in the world. Many large corporations have their headquarters in Atlanta, including the Coca-Cola Company. It is also the location of theU.S Centers of Disease Control.
Peachtree Center, in downtown Atlanta, has hotels, shops, and meeting halls. Atlanta was the first southern city to build a subway. It connects the downtown areawith others parts of the city.
Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta. He served as pastor of a church there and was buried there in 1968. In 1973, the people of Atlanta elected MaynardJackson mayor. He was the first black person to be elected mayor of a large southern city.
