Fall Final Exam Review—Part 1

➢ The final exam will cover everything you have learned this semester. Because we did not have a Unit 4 test, about 40-50% of the test will be on Unit 4.
➢ The rest of the test will cover Units 1 and 2. You will get this part of the review next time; it will be posted on Blackboard.
➢ Review your lecture notes, Unit Test Review packets, use flashcards, test yourself, or have a family member test you from this Final Exam Review!
➢ It is your responsibility to CHECK YOUR ANSWERS to this review, before you begin studying for the exam! If you’re not sure, look it up!
➢ While you are taking the test, you will be allowed to have hand-written notes (not computer printed or typed) on ONE side of a plain 4” x 6” index card which I willprovide to you on the class day before the final exam. On the stamped side of the card, you will write your name and period. When your card is checked before the test, if there are notes on both sides of the card, or if they are computer generated, you will not be allowed to use any notes for the test. All cards will be collected when you turn in your test.
➢ You will receive your index cardin class and you will work on your card that day.
➢ Bring a book to read or something to study QUIETLY after you finish the test. You will also have a word search to work on, for EC points for the NEW SEMESTER. The word search will be due on the first day of class for the next semester, so that you can begin the semester with + points!
➢ NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES (INCLUDING IPODS,CALCULATORS, ETC.) ARE ALLOWED DURING THE ENTIRE FINAL EXAM PERIOD.
Unit 4:

1. What are the phases of the cell cycle, in the correct order? Start with the phase in which the cell spends most of its time.
2. What happens in each phase of the cell cycle? List each phase and write a description of what happens in each phase.
3. What does each phase of the cell cycle look like? You should beable to identify each phase from a drawing of a cell in the various phases. For the test review, draw and label each phase.
4. What does mitosis do? What are the reasons that our cells do mitosis? What type of cells do mitosis? Know the scientific and the common name for these cells.
5. How many cells are made from 1 parent cell in mitosis? Are these cells genetically identical or arethey different from the parent cell? What is another term for cell reproduction? What is the name of the process that makes identical nuclei (thinking question)?
6. In which general phase of the cell cycle does DNA replication occur? In which phase of the cell cycle does the cell spend most of its time?
7. What do chromatin, chromosomes, and chromatids have in common? (Hint: what arethey made of?) In which phase of mitosis do you first see chromosomes?
8. What is the structure of DNA called? What is the full name of DNA? Which organic macromolecule does DNA code for?
9. Who were the scientists who won the Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA? Who was the scientist whose X-ray photograph was used by them to make their discovery?
10. What 2 moleculesmake up the sides of the DNA molecule? Which molecules make up the steps of the DNA molecule? Write out the names of the 4 nitrogen bases in DNA.
11. Which molecules make up a nucleotide? Draw a DNA molecule (use your DNA Structure & Replication Lab drawing as an example).
12. What are the correct complementary base pairs for DNA? For RNA? What is the chemical reason that certain nitrogenbases pair with its complementary base?
13. What is the full name for RNA? What are the differences between RNA and DNA? Write out the name of the nitrogen base that is different in RNA. How are DNA and RNA similar?
14. What is the term for DNA replication that describes that one strand is from the original DNA molecule and one is new? Do DNA structure and DNA replication have a...
