Avro Arrow
The company that designed and built both the Arrow aircraft and the Iroquois
engine was Avro Canada. During the war, a Canadian Crown Corporation, Victory
Aircraft, producedthe English Avro Lancaster bomber. The English firm, impressed
with the Canadian performance, decided to start an operation under the name of
Avro Canada in this plant after the war. AvroCanada's mandate was to design,
develop and manufacture new products.
The avro arrow was the first Canadian supersonic aircraft, powered with 2 avro
canada Iroquois enginer and it used thedelta-wings.
It was created in malton, Ontario by avro Canada company and design for james
Floyd, the president of avro Canada company was Crawford Gordon, he born in
Manitoba on 26 december 1914.The Avro Arrow is the story of a near perfect machine, a supersonic aircraft
created by Canadian engineers, technicians and skilled workers only to be
destroyed by Canadian politicians in1959. This destruction included not only the
cancellation of the project, but also the work of more than 11,600 workers
The avro arrow was one of the best Canadian aircrafts and the firstsupersonic, the
design of this aircraft took a lot of time since 1953 they start to designing but the
aircraft showed many complications, then a couple of years later when the plane
was finished on1957, the test pilot jan zurakowski did the first flight of the avro
arrow 201 supersonic aircraft on march 25, 1958, thousands of people witnessed
the first flight of the prototype, then theproject pilot jack woodman( who was the
only military to flight this aircraft) made many flights to try this aircraft . the cost of
each unit was 3.5-5 million dollars and the cost of allproject was more than 400
million dollars, so, the development costs went seriously over budget and on
February 20, 1959, on the “black Friday” the prime minister John Diefenbaker
cancelled...
