9th Grade Benchmarks
Communication, Speaking, Listening, & Media Literacy:
• The student will make planned oral presentations independently and in small groups. (9.1)
• The student will produce, analyze, and evaluate auditory, visual, and written media messages. (9.2)
Reading:
• The student will apply knowledge of wordorigins, derivations, and figurative language to extend vocabulary development in authentic texts. (9.3)
• The student will read, comprehend, and analyze a variety of literary texts including narratives, narrative nonfiction, poetry, and drama. (9.4)
• The student will read and analyze a variety of nonfiction texts. (9.5)
Writing:
• The student will develop narrative, expository, andpersuasive writings for a variety of audiences and purposes. (9.6)
• The student will self- and peer-edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and paragraphing. (9.7)
Research:
• The student will use print, electronic databases, online resources, and other media to access information to create a research product. (9.8)

Core Writing
The focus of our English 9 writing program is the development and mastery of the fundamental skills of good writing. These include:
• Grammatical sentenceconstruction
• Paragraph structure
• Thesis construction
• Essay organization and structure
• Summary and paraphrase writing
• Introduction and practice responding to an SOL essay prompt
• Development of narrative writing skills
• Development of analytical writing skills (Examples: compare/contrast writing; character development and analysis)
• Persuasive writing• Expository writing

Core Research
Ninth grade research is coordinated with and co-taught by the Lee librarians and focuses on the basic skills needed to conduct effective research. These skills include:
• An understanding of what constitutes plagiarism and the consequences of plagiarism
• MLA documentation for print and electronic sources
• Using parenthetical in-textcitations in writing for both print and online sources
• Using both print and online sources
• Translating information from a note card into writing to demonstrate an understanding of paraphrasing and summarizing
• Producing a Works Cited Page
• Producing electronic notes that include page number and source

Quarterly Grades
You should expect a minimum of two graded assignmentsper week.
You should expect a minimum of two major assignments per quarter.

Your final average for each quarter is weighted as follows:
• Major Assignments 30% (To include projects, essays/major writing assignments, presentations, tests)
• Minor Assignments 60% (To include in-class writings/journals, quizzes, class work, etc.)

• Homework 10%
