Bullying and its Effects
Bullying has become a major issue across the nation in the last few decades and is something that needs to be prevented to stop any kind of verbal, social or physical violence that may come along with it. Verbal, social, and physical are the three types of bullying. “The NEA (National EducationAssociation) argues that bullying has become more “lethal” and more frequent over the past few decades, and that concerted action to prevent and eventually eradicate bullying is more necessary than ever.” (“Bullying”) Bullying has become a touchy subject when people talk about it because it is something that happens every single day to many individuals across the world. People do not realize howpresent of an issue it really is until they see or hear it happening to someone around them, a friend, a loved one, or until it affects themselves. There are many cases that have come out from mostly kids in schools raging from elementary schools to high schools about being bullied by their classmates over different types of things. It has no discrimination against age, race, sex or religion. Thiscan happen to anyone. Bullying is a serious matter that can be very dangerous. The result of this can lead to major depression and in worst case scenarios ends up in suicide.
Verbal bullying would be one of the most common out of the three because it is more apparent to hear and see. Verbal bullying consists of: teasing, name calling, inappropriate sexual comments, taunting, and threatening tocause harm onto others are some of the verbal examples of bullying. Commonly, it is the male who will generally be a bully in-direct physical ways while the female uses less-direct tactics to bully their victim. Verbal bullying is similar to verbal abuse both affecting the mental process of the person being harmed as well as their aspect on life. “Miss America 2003, Erika Harold, chose to championanti-bullying during her reign. Her reason for doing so was that she herself had been bullied in ninth grade. "It started out with people calling me names, and then it got worse," Harold explained. "They threw things at me, they vandalized my house, and they sang nasty songs about me in school hallways and classrooms. It got so bad that I felt like I was in danger physically." (“Bullying”) Peopledo not realize the damage words can leave until it is too late and the damage has already been done. In the long run, it can be just as harmful as physical abuse. It is sad how a person has to tease someone and hurt them in order to feel good about themselves or get a boost in their confidence and self-esteem. It is sick to think how some even get a rise out of doing despicable things onto others. Now a days, there are many ways that bullies can do harm through the internet and also through cellular technology. Social bullying is when someone hurts another person’s reputation or relationship by spreading rumors, or embarrassing someone in public. Bullies harass their victims through emails, IM’s, text messages, even popular sites as Facebook and Twitter that are frequently visited bybillons of people every day. This is commonly known as cyber bullying. These things aren’t necessarily done behind a computer or phone but also out in the open. People will spread rumors and say horrible things about someone for everyone to hear to belittle and embarrass them. “Take the case of eighth grader, Amanda Marcuson, who reported some of her classmates to school authorities after they stolesome of her makeup. Marcuson told a New York Times reporter that she was almost immediately barraged with hateful instant messages (IM’s) on her home computer. The messages accused her of being a lair, insulted her and called her a number of dirty names.” (“Cyberbullying Pervades the Public School Experience“) Cyber bullying is a very popular technique that bullies use to harass people because to...
