Wearing clothes is part of people’s daily routine. In the story The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald clothing associates with firstimpressions, money, and even with the characters personalities. Clothing is used by human beings everyday whether it’s for a special occasion, to feel comfortable, or just to dress according to theweather; they wear clothes. In the story clothing reveals that many of the characters value their appearance because they are always trying to look their finest. I believe that clothing is a culturaldevelopment because it has changed multiple times throughout the years.
Gatsby purposely dresses elegant on a rainy day in order to impress Daisy, the women who he loves. He was wearing a “whiteflannel suit, silver shirt, and gold-colored tie” (84). He dressed in that way, so that Daisy could see him as a well-dressed man. He hadn’t seen her in many years and wanted to give Daisy a goodimpression of himself. My discussion of Gatsby dressing elegant is in fact addressing the larger matter of him being afraid that Daisy would dislike him if he was dressed as an ordinary person. Thisconveys that a person’s way of dressing can affect of what people think of them, especially after not seeing them in many years.
In addition, in the story the way that people dressed defined whetherthe characters were wealthy or not. For example, when I am walking through the streets I can tell the difference with a bum and a regular person because bums are usually in rags and a regular personis dressed in casual clothes. Nick described,” Shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel” (92). This reveals that the clothes that Gatsby wore were very expensive, so that shows thatGatsby was a man of money. He didn’t even have to say it himself his clothes spoke for him. Jordan explains, “I had on a new plaid skirt” (74). This depicts that Jordan was not wealthy. This is important...
