The Carnival of is the folk festival and cultural center ofBarranquilla and Colombia.1 2 3 More than 1 million people, visitors and locals participate annually in the party, 4 which is held from Saturday until Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, usually in February, andsometimes in early March. It has a tradition of more than one hundred years. The Carnival season begins the second Saturday in January, when they begin public festivals and fairs, however, otheractivities directly related to the carnival take place throughout much of the year.5 The birth of the Carnival of Barranquilla was in the nineteenth century , 6 7 8 9 and is currently involved about 500 folkgroups (costumes and floats) and generates an estimated 40 billion pesos in ingresos.10

Carnival is a cultural event in which all varieties are expressed cultural and folklore of the Caribbean Coastand the most varied local cultural events, folk music and dance. It is the most representative of the city that attracts friends and strangers.

For its variety and cultural wealth, the Carnival ofBarranquilla has won two major awards: "National Cultural Heritage", in a statement issued by the National Congress of Colombia on November 26, 2001, and "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritageof Humanity ", issued by UNESCO in Paris on November 7, 2003.11
