The battles in the desert is a story from Jose Emilio Pacheco the story is about a boy named Carlos who falls in love with his best friend´s motherMariana, and of course this love is considered impossible. One day Carlos decides to tell Jim´s mom how she really feels about her skipping school to do that. People noticed this and started todiscriminate him about the feelings he had about Mariana even his parents, so they took him to a psychologist and a priest seeking for help, then Jim who was his best friend becomes his enemy because he isnot agree with what Carlos feels about his mother. Eventually Carlos moves from Mexico because his father found a better job, always keeping in mind Mariana and knowing he was still in love with her.He didn´t knew anything about Jim and Mariana and everyone told him that Jim moved out with his dad when Mariana died he couldn´t believed that the love of his life was dead.

This novel is not onlyabout the love that Carlos felt about Mariana but also deals with social and political problems at the beginning of modern Mexico and the disappearance of the traditions and culture.

CharactersCarlos: a boy aged about 10 years old, innocent, liberal, he is in love with Mariana.

Mariana: It is a very beautiful lady, it´s also Jim´s mom and Carlos crush.

Charlie's parents: they causethe conflict in the story by putting Carlos in a very difficult position.

Jim: Carlos best friend also the son of Mariana

Environment

The story takes place in Mexico, in the times of MiguelAleman, around 1946 to 1952 when the government of Mexico was suffering from problems of corruption.
