Battle for the Tragic Hero: Antigone Essay
Creon’s lamentation could have not been any greater. His son was dead! Yet the punishments for his deeds were not to be over; the prophesy was not fullyfulfilled. As he approached his dwelling with deep sorrow a messenger dropped news that stormed out the last of him. Just when he had thought he had been punished enough, his wife laid motionless onthe floor as he hurriedly opened the doors. Her heart had welcomed a friendly knife that her own hand had guided (Sophocles, Antigone, Exodos, 113) In “Antigone”, a drama written by Sophocles andtranslated by Dudley Fitts & Robert Fitzgerald, the reader is cordially invited to the life of two prominent tragic heroes. This characters being Antigone and Creon; both stood strong for their belief ofwhat is “right”. As for who is the best depiction of a tragic hero, I’d have to undoubtly affirm that Creon fits the post more notably. Before touching bottom with the quarrel, a definition for atragic hero must be offered. What differs a tragic hero from the normal “everyday hero” is dignity and nobleness that is demonstrated from the hero’s part. Nonetheless, a tragic hero will have possessionof a flaw that will contribute to an impishly downfall. Normally the tragic hero will at last recognize the fault and try to change the course of fate, but by then it will be too late. Creon assemblesthe three of the requirements for a tragic hero: heroism, flaw, and the inevitable tragic ending.
Just as a perfect hero would, Creon is in power of the value that follows all that’s right(according to his deem). As he takes throne of Thebes he announces to his sovereignty about his ideals of leadership. “I am aware…that no ruler can expect complete loyalty from his subjects until he hasbeen tested in office. Nevertheless, I say to you at the very outset I have nothing but contempt for the kind of governor who is afraid, for whatever reason, to follow the course that he knows is...
