Beowulf
Records of Anglo-Saxon literature were kept in monasteries. They came to light at the time of the Reformation when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. Oral literature passed down by wordof mouth from generation to generation, its creators for the most part unknown. It was a verse literature. Sound was the essence of verse. Poems were recited by ______or _________
1-What kind of poemis Beowulf or Widsith ? Account for the meaning of the name of the poem ?
Every surviving heroic poem from the period before the Norman Conquest was written down decades and even generations afterthe original compositon ( oral ) of the whole poem. There is no extant manuscript of Old English poetry which is the original author´s own copy. Rather, the manuscript represents the effort of a laterindividual to fix an older poem in writing for the benefit of prosperity. Beowulf was written at the end of the 9th C. It is a stirring, warlike, violent poem of over 3,000 lines. The Anglo-Saxonmonks had the blood of warriors in them. They were the sons and grandsons of the Vikings.
It is the most important monument of Old English …….literature.
