Bertolt Brecht´S Stage Conventions

Brecht used Set Designs merely as "suggestive" and not realistic. They were also commonly scarce as his purpose was to constantly remind public that they were watching a play.
As so, in the playMother Courage and Her children, the set design is merely composed in most, if not all of the productions made of it, of a cart in the middle of a empty stage. And this sole cart itself representseconomy and survival to Mother Courage and her children. The rest of the stage is merely illuminated in a way later explained and sometimes, in the back of the stage there is a quote or a representativeimage.
The scarcity of scene is evident in Mother Courage and her children. For example, there is a scene where the mother goes to visit her imprisoned son, where we see a stage only decorated with amesh that separates the two characters.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Scene: Grusche´s wedding with the dying making explicit the shortage of scenery. The use of painted cloth, sticks and projectionsto decorate the stage shows his clear intention of representing reality but just leave the idea.

Costumes, in the other hand had to make clear the social class of the persons wearing them, althoughnot era specific, they give an idea of the layers and age of the characters and their journey. Each costume makes an individual point about the character. The costumes also embody the fine linebetween the illusion of the story being told, and the reality that it is being told in a theater to illustrate a concept about human nature. They are authentic enough to suggest the imagination of thestory, but are clearly demarcated as costumes, worn by actors, rather than clothes worn by characters. There is no attempt to make the play’s story real, but rather acknowledge the reality that the playis a story being told in a theater by actors wearing costumes.
