FERNANDO LLORT
Fernando Llort is a Salvadorian painter, sculptor, muralist, composer and performerof the international gratitude. Llort is called “El Salvador´s National Artist” by the Foundation Self-Sufficiency in Central America. He is known for teaching and inspiring the small town of LaPalma, Chalatenango, how to make a living through art. New experiences led him to further his studies in France in 1968. This was a very important time in Llort's life because being out of the countrygave him a strong sense of cultural identity with El Salvador and that’s why he is important to our country.
One of the most important accomplishments or work of Llort was that he started an artworkshop called "El Árbol de Dios" (God's tree) giving the opportunity to the people to learn about art where he displays and sells his art. His work also can be seen decorating the facade of theMetropolitan Cathedral and in the Hotel Real Inter-Continental. He also founded El Movimiento de Pintores de La Palma. And he helped the campesinos to have another job than field work.
The MetropolitanCathedral of the Holy Savior (Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador) is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador and the seat of the Archbishop of San Salvador. The facade ofthe Cathedral is decorated with a mural made by Fernando Llort representing the Salvadorian handcraft that means “La Armonía de mi Pueblo” that combined with the pre-Columbian ancestral and Christianiconography. It took 1 year to develop. He was invited to design the facade of the Metropolitan Cathedral. Llort said that was one of the most inspiring and artistic moments of his life, because he wasputting all his hard work and talent into a symbol of his country with a huge historical value.
