Cuadrado rojo, imposible rosa es una suerte de arqueología afectiva sobre la modernidad, que nos permite entender, desde otra perspectiva, los emplazamientos geoestéticos de la modernidad en las sociedades actuales. Al Cuadrado rojo de Malevich como formalizaciónsuprematista de la utopía, Melanie Smith opone el rosa imposible como lugar informe de realización histórica de los proyectos de la modernidad. Cuadrado rojo, imposible rosa es la puesta en el espacio de una imagen dialéctica que expresa la oposición entre lo posible y lo imposible. Si la modernidad es algo más que la pura ficción eurocéntrica de la relación entre historia y utopía, si la modernidades sobre todo la historia de una expansión colonialista, sin duda el cuadrado es algo más que lo posible y los colores algo más que su pureza. Imposible rosa es una ironía y paradoja, un distanciamiento, que busca desmantelar las utopías a la hora de explorar sus emplazamientos heterotópicos como lógicas del caos. Las tres piezas de video que aquí se presentan fueron realizadas en colaboración conRafael Ortega. Para su presentación en Venecia, se trabajó sobre la noción de emplazamiento como juego dialéctico entre ruina y caos, operación en la que la pintura y la instalación funcionan como intervenciones espectrales entre el Palazzo Rota Ivancich y las piezas de video.

Red Square Impossible Pink is a sort of affective archaeology of modernity that allows us to understand thegeo-aesthetics of modernity in contemporary societies from another perspective. To Malevich’s Red Square, as a Suprematist formalization of utopia, Melanie Smith opposes the impossible pink as the unformed place of an historical realization of the projects of modernity. Red Square Impossible Pink spatializes a dialectical image that expresses the opposition between the possible and the impossible. Ifmodernity is something more than the pure Eurocentric fiction of the relationship between history and utopia, if modernity is above all the history of colonial expansion, the square is no doubt something more than the possible and colors something more than their purity. Impossible Pink is an irony and a paradox, a distancing that seeks to dismantle utopias by exploring their heterotopic condition aslogics of chaos. The three video pieces presented here were created in collaboration with Rafael Ortega. Their presentation in Venice involves the notion of emplacement as a dialectical play between ruins and chaos, an operation in which painting and installation function as spectral interventions between the Palazzo Rota Ivancich and the video pieces.

Melanie Smithnació en Poole, Inglaterra, en 1965. Obtuvo la licenciatura en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Reading. Desde 1989 vive y trabaja en la ciudad de México, donde su obra ha estado enormemente influenciada por la experiencia de vivir en la ciudad. Su trabajo se ha definido por cierta relectura de las categorías formales y estéticas de los movimientos de la vanguardia y la posvanguardia problematizadas...
