Los comienzos del Big Ben
En 1834 un incendio derrumbó parte del palacio de Westminster lo que requirió una reconstrucción. La torre del reloj fue parte de los planes en este momento ybuscaba darle más protagonismo al Palacio. Con sus 96 metros de altura la torre se imponía entonces y aun hoy, en el paisaje londinense.
El reloj
Por unos 20 años la torre no contó con el famoso relojque hoy aparece en las fotografías de los viajeros. Fue sólo en 1858 se instaló en la torre y unos años más tarde ya funcionaba a la perfección.
El reloj incluía una imponente campana de casi 14toneladas y tiene 3 metros de diametro. La campana es la que le ha dado el nombre tan representativo de Big Ben. La campana suena a cada hora y desde la primera vez que trinó el 7 de Septiembre de 1959 sevolvió uno de los íconos más representativos de los ingleses y sus tradiciones: ¿has escuchado alguna vez de la puntualidad inglesa?
Hoy en día el reloj, la torre y su campana son uno de losmonumentos más visitados y fotografiados de Londres.

In 1834 a fire collapsed part of the Palace of Westminster which required a reconstruction. The clocktower was part of the plans at this time and sought to give more prominence to the Palace. With its 96 meter high tower was necessary then and even today, in the London landscape.
