Chapter 2: Biodiversity in animals
In the terms of biodiversity, Mexico belongs to five most important regions of the world taking the first place in reptile biodiversitywith over 740 described species, second in mammals (526), fourth in amphibians (290 and rising) and vascular plants (26,000) and tenth in birds (1,150).
Examples of MammalsBarbary Sheep
Barbary Sheep are grazers and can get moisture from unlikely places, such as early-morning dew and the woody plants and grasses that they eat. They are usuallymost active at dawn and dusk, choosing to rest during the hottest parts of the day. They can go without water for an extended period, getting all of the moisture that theyneed from their food, but, if water is available, they will bathe in it and drink liberally.
Black Bear
The black bear is found throughout North America. It is amedium sized bear, weighing in on average at 180 kilograms, but they can get much heavier than this. They range from about 1.4 to 1.9 metres in length. The black bear has curvedclaws which are very strong, and assist the bear in hunting and climbing.
Examples of reptiles
Mexican crocodiles are mostly found in the southern area.
GreenIguana
A herbivore, it has adapted significantly with regard to locomotion and osmoregulation as a result of its diet. It grows to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in length from head totail, although a few specimens have grown more than 2 metres (6.6 ft) with bodyweights upward of 20 pounds (9.1 kg).
Commonly found in captivity as a pet due to its calmdisposition and bright colors, it can be demanding to care for properly. Space requirements and the need for special lighting and heat can prove challenging to an amateur hobbyist.
