Bioética laica y bioética religiosa. Claves para una argumentación contemporánea

Resumen En el contexto del debate plural contemporáneo es común el empleo del adjetivo laico como única manera de actuar en la discusión pública de temas bioéticos. Esto conduce a plantarse una pregunta, ¿es ilegítima la contribución de las religiones a la reflexión bioética actual? Dos son las respuestas posibles. Una primera afirmativa,basada en que la sociedad contemporánea se caracteriza por ser laica y pluralista y los valores en los que se basa y las obligaciones de sus miembros se definen de manera consensuada a través de los procedimientos democráticos. En este contexto, las aportaciones religiosas, en cuanto integrantes de la faceta privada de los individuos, quedarían excluidas. O bien puede darse una respuestanegativa, que se basaría en la afirmación de que los seres humanos se identifican como integrantes de distintos sistemas de valores particulares muchos de ellos impregnados por elementos religiosos. Según esta postura, el fenómeno religioso sería uno de los elementos más relevantes dentro del debate sobre el pluralismo cultural en cuanto que sirve de guía, de orientación y de inspiración de las conductas.El artículo se propone dar respuesta a la pregunta planteada, analizando cada una de las dos posibles posturas. El artículo se desarrolla en dos bloques: en el primero se analiza qué significa laico cuando se usa en el contexto bioético y en el segundo se examina si en el ámbito de las sociedades

democráticas es legítima la contribución de las religiones al debate bioético actual. La exposición finaliza con unas conclusiones. Abstract Within the context of the contemporary plural debate, it is common to use the adjective secular as if it were the only manner to participate in the bioethical debate of Western multi-ethnic society. This situation gives rise to the question of whether there can be a religious contribution to the current bioethical debate. There are two possible answers. The first,an affirmative one, is centered on the fact that contemporary society is characterized by pluralistic and secular values on which is based the obligations of its members, defined by consensus through democratic procedures. In this context, religious contribution, as something from the private sphere, must be excluded. The alternative response to our central question may be negative, based on theassertion that human beings are identified as members of different value systems, many of them imbued with religious elements. From this point of view, the religious phenomenon would be one of the most important elements in the debate on cultural pluralism, because it guides, and serves as an inspiration of our conduct. This article aims to answer our central question by analyzing each of the twopossible positions. The article is divided into two sections; the first analyses the significance of the term secular when it is employed in the sphere of bioethics and the second examines whether, within the scope of democratic societies, the current religious contribution to the bioethics debate has any legitimacy.
