Salvador Domènec Felip Jacint Dalí i Domènech, most known as Salvador Dalí, was one of the most important Spanish painters.He was born on the 11th of May, 1904 in Figueras (Catalonia,Spain). His father was Salvador Dalí y Cusí, who worked as a notary, and his mother was Felipa Domènech Ferres. He started studying in his home town and when he was fourteen years old, hetook part in some exhibitions for the first time. One of them was local but the other one was celebrated in Barcelona, where he was given a prize by the University.

In 1921, his motherdied of cancer and his father married his sister-in-law, so Salvador moved to Madrid, where he joined the Student's Residence. There, he got to know other great artists like Luis Buñuel andFederico García Lorca. Both of them became Dalí's very close friends while he was studying in the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. During the next years, he explored different styles ofpainting, including cubism and surrealism.

In 1926, he travelled to Paris for the fist time in order to visit Picasso.

He collaborated with Luis Buñuel on the film "An Andalusian dog",which was released in Paris in 1929. In the same year, Salvador met Gala, who would be his muse and partner for the rest of his life.

Throughout the Spanish Civil War, he lived inItaly. Then, he moved to USA, France and Lisboa.

In 1948, he came back to Spain and also to the classic style on his works. He created his first religous paintings (two versions of theMadonna de Port Lligat) and wrote about the nuclear art. Dalí was starting to feel the need to stand out, so he emphasized his eccentricity and his interest for the money and the power.Gala died in 1982, when Dalí gave up on the painting. Finally, on the 24th of January, 1989, he died in his castle in Pubol. He was buried the next day in the theatre-museum of Figueras.
