Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto on January 12, 1949.
Although born in Kyoto, lived most of his youth in Kobe. His fatherwas the son of a Buddhistpriest. His mother, the daughter of an Osaka merchant. Both taught Japanese literature. From youth, Murakami was very influenced by Western culture, particularly inmusic and literature. He grew up reading many books by American authors, as urt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan. Western influencesare those which oftendistinguish from other Japanese writers Murakami.
He studied Greek literature and theater at the University of Waseda (Soudai), where he met his wife, Yoko.
He is a writer andtranslator Japanese novelist and short stories.His works of fiction and nonfiction have generated positive reviews and numerous awards.
Murakami's fiction,often criticized by the traditional Japaneseliterature, is surreal and focuses on concepts such as alienation and loneliness. It is considered an important figure in postmodernliterature.
In 1986, with the huge success of his novel Norwegian Wood, left Japan to live in Europe and America, but returned to Japan in 1995 after the earthquakein Kobe, where he spent his childhood, and thesarin gas attack by Aum Shinrikyo sect that ('Supreme Truth') perpetrated in the Tokyo subway. Murakami later writeabout both events.
Murakami is also a sports fan. It is marathon runner and triathlete, but did not start running until age 33. On June 23, 1996, completedhis first ultramarathon, a 100-mile around Lake Saroma inHokkaido, Japan.
