Adam Smith: (1723-1790)

Smith was one of those 18th century Scottish moral philosophers whose impulses led to our modern day theories; his work marks the breakthrough of an evolutionary approach which has progressively displaced the stationary Aristotelian view.
He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations (1776). At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to GlasgowUniversity, studying moral philosophy under "the never-to-be-forgotten"

The Wealth of Nations has become so influential since it did so much to create the subject of political economy and develop it into an autonomous systematic discipline. In the western world, it is the most influential book on the subject ever published. When the book, which has become a classic manifesto againstmercantilism, appeared in 1776, there was a strong sentiment for free trade in both Britain and America. This new feeling had been born out of the economic hardships and poverty caused by the war. However, at the time of publication, not everybody was convinced of the advantages of free trade right away: the British public and Parliament still clung to mercantilism for many years to come (Tindall and Shi).However, controversial views have been expressed as to the extent of Smith's originality in The Wealth of Nations. Smith has been blamed for relying too much on the ideas of great thinkers such as David Hume and Montesquieu. Nevertheless, The Wealth of Nations was the first and remains the most important book on the subject of political economy until this present day.

Edwards Deming:

William Edwards Deming was born in Sioux City, Iowa, in the middle of the USA. His senior year's mathematics teacher at high school encouraged him to go to university, in spite of his parents' slender resources. Eventually he received a Ph.D at the Yale University, in the field of Theoretical Physics.
He worked there for tenyears, on the development of nitrate fertilizers. Deming used to give lectures of Statistics at the institute founded by the Department of Agriculture for training agricultural engineers.

During the Second World War, Deming stayed in Washington and used hisknowledge for the service of the arms industry. Productivity did not improve; quality did not improve; but Japan was defeated.
The Japanese industry adopted the Deming management theories immediately and ten years later Japanese products started to flood into America. The American consumers made no mistake: they were better and cheaper. It is a turning point in world history.
In July 1950, Demingaddressed the 24 leaders of the Keidanren in his historic lecture, and said : "to some extent, my way brings democracy in industry". Thousands of examples attest that this new management approach is outstandingly helpful to dialogue and achievement of common goals.

Frederick Taylor:

Was an American mechanical engineer who soughtto improve industrial efficiency. He is regarded as the father of scientific management and was one of the first management consultants. Taylor was one of the intellectual leaders of the Efficiency Movement

Frederick Winslow Taylor devised a system he called scientific management, a form of industrial engineering that established the organization of work as in Ford's assembly line. Thisdiscipline, along with the industrial psychology established by others at the Hawthorne Works of Western Eclectic in the 1920s, moved management theory from early time-and-motion studies to the latest total quality control ideas.
