Introduction:
The worth of a civilization can be judged by the place given to women in the society. Women in India constitute nearly 50% of its population. Given that almost half of the population of India is female we strongly believe that by allowing women to have more rights and having their roles increase within the Indian societythis could very well end up being one of the main levers to reduce poverty in India. Women In India though considered equal to men have numerous disadvantages within the Indian population. Their role consists mostly of serving their family’s which in most cultures is believed to be a secondary role. Though India appears to be showing more support towards their women through the election of afemale president in the 2007 elections named Pratihba Patil, women are still considered to be inferior to men through the eyes of many Indians. India’s economic growth as well as their increased support towards the rights of women appear from the outside perspective to be improving, in reality however both these perceptions could not be more wrong.
Before providing our solutions as to how we believewoman could have an impact on the economic growth of India we will start off by using the MOC framework.
Endowments that can explain the position of women in India:
-The Patriarchal Society: In India there has always existed some type of patriarch society in which males are the central part of the social organization and where women are inferior to them.
-Social beliefs, (the acceptance of thetheory of karma or fatalism): Given India’s diverse population with a wide variety of religions and with Hinduism being the biggest religion of them all most Indians believe in karma. Hindus believe that all suffering is due to one’s own past actions, in this or in a previous life, some believe that karma implies direct determinism or fatalism. Given that 80.5% of the population In India practices theHindu religion, most will believe that how they live today (poverty, sickness, women) are actions from past life and they are getting what they deserve. Which is why many people don’t aspire and try to become successful they have to become content with what they got because this is what they deserved from past actions.
-Cultural Rules (the male domination in all walks of life). India has beencategorized as a male dominating society where men are the central figures. Women rights although they do exist within their constitution are not being applied fairly to them.
-Diverse Population: India is the birthplace of four the world’s major religious traditions which are; Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Hinduism accounts for 80.5% of the population of India, Islam 13.4%, Christianity2.3%, Sikhism 1.9%, and Buddhism .8% and Jainism 0.4% of the population. All this diverse religious beliefs that today exist in India are a result of the existence and birth of native regions, immigrants and social integration of religions. Throughout India’s history religion has played a major part in the country’s population and culture. A vast majority of Indians associate themselves withreligion. Given its diverse population and diverse religions India has always been highly tolerant of different practicing religions. Recently however when a Hindu majority party received control of the country, that tolerance has almost disappeared.
Macroeconomic Competitiveness:
Metrics: Fiscal policy (debt) and Monetary (inflation): though their inflation is around 9% that is not a real figure astheir inflation on food has risen to 130%.
Macroeconomic (structural imbalances) policies:
-Commodization of women
-Education: Cultures can educate people to make them believe certain things and education people of how India is a male dominating society in which women don’t deserve and should have a bigger role can alternate peoples way of thinking.
-Equality for all: In order for men and women to...
