A comparison between oseous and muscular tissue

Introduction

Bone and muscles are necessary for movement. Like any other organs they are formed using large tissues of eukaryotic cells, showingseveral characteristics that immediately point out that you are looking at a multicellular organism. At the same time, some strange things are visible in both the anatomy of a bone and a muscle.Today, you will receive two ready-made specimens of bone (osseous) and muscular tissue. You’ll be using these specimens to answer the following main question:

• How do osseous and muscular tissuedeviate from the standard cell theory (Topic 2.1)?

Subquestions to answer are:

• Which visible organelles are recognizable when specimens are studied under a light microscope at a maximummagnification of 400x?
• In which ways do these cells show they are eukaryotic (Topic 2.3)?
• What is the cell theory?
• Which evidence is visible in both tissue types that supports thistheory?
• Which deviations are visible that could be/are a cause for discussion of how to apply the cell theory to these tissues?

Procedure

• Study the specimens under a microscope, using your acquired skills. You will be assessed on MS (manipulative skills, Biology syllabus 2009-2010, page 28 & 29) .
• Draw both specimens.
• Use pages 23 (general eukaryotic cellstructure) and 256 (muscular tissue) to label visible structures in your specimens.
• Find suitable sources on the internet to be able to label the structures visible in your specimen containing osseoustissue.
• Write a report about your findings. Take into account the demands on written work as given by the IB (Biology syllabus 2009-2010, page 28)
• Hand in your digital file via TeleTOPbefore the deadline.
• Hand in a hardcopy with your labelled drawings attached to it the first lesson after the deadline.

Assessment

• This work will not be assessed and graded and as...
