CALARTS APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Admission to CalArts is competitive and considered mainly on the basis of demonstrated talent, creativity and commitment. The Institute welcomes applications for admission from anyone committed to the visual, performing and writing arts. Students areadmitted on a full-time basis only and commence studies primarily in the fall semester.
2012–13 APPLICATION DEADLINES
Spring 2012
The spring priority deadline is November 2, 2011. Some of our programs offer a limited number of spaces for the spring semester. Applications received after this date will be reviewed until the program is filled. Please call the Office of Admissions to learn ifyour program is accepting spring applications. The School of Film/ Video, the Acting Program and the Program in Graphic Design do not accept applications for the spring semester.
Fall 2012
The Preferred Deadline for Fall 2012 is December 1, 2011.
Students applying under the Preferred Deadline will have a lower application fee.
The Regular Deadline for Fall 2012 is January 5, 2012.
Applicationsand portfolios submitted after the Regular Deadline will be reviewed in the order received until the program is filled. Once a program is closed, late applicants cannot be reviewed. The programs requiring live auditions close after the final scheduled auditions. There are no “make-up” auditions. Please contact
the Office of Admissions at 800 545-2787 to inquire about open programs after theRegular Deadline has passed.

STANDARDIZED TESTING
CalArts does not require standardized test scores (SAT I or ACT). However, if you submit test scores, we will consider those scores as a part of your admissions review.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is the standard preliminary indicator used to gauge the non-nativeEnglish speaker’s proficiency in English. Applicants must take the TOEFL and, to meet the Institute’s minimum standard, attain a score of at least 80 on the Internet-based test (IBT) for the BFA programs and 100 on the IBT for MFA, MA and DMA programs. Applications from international students may not be reviewed if they do not include a TOEFL score. For more information, refer to theInternational Students section.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Your application for admission will be evaluated only after the Office of Admissions has received all required materials. It is your responsibility to be certain that all necessary materials have been sent. The requirements are as follows:
1. Application and Fee
A non-refundable fee is required for each application submitted, made payable toCalArts. The fee schedule is as follows:
Applications meeting the Preferred Deadline of December 1, 2011: $50 for each domestic application
$65 for each international application
Applications meeting the Regular Deadline of January 5, 2012: $70 for each domestic application
$85 for each international application
Students applying online may submit their fee with a credit card or send a check ormoney order after submission. Those students applying with our downloadable application must submit a check or money order with their application. Applications received without payment will not be processed. Fee waivers must be submitted in writing, and should accompany the paper application, or be sent after applying online. CalArts will accept the standard College Board fee waiver, or a letter froma high school/transfer counselor who can verify family financial hardship. Fee waivers are not granted to MFA, MA or DMA applicants, or to international applicants.
2. Portfolio or Audition
Every student applying to CalArts must audition or submit a portfolio.
