What is reading?

Reading can be defined as making meaning from print or aprocess of readers combining information from a text and their own background knowledge to, build meaning . It has 4 elements:

* The Reader
* The text
* Reading strategies
* FluencyWhen you learn to read in your native language is the only time that you learn it, after that, when you learn a second language you learn no transfer this knowledge and skills to the new language.Establishing a culture of reading

There are 3 important benefits of reading

* Much of the information available comes into a format of print.
* Reading strengthens other areas oflearning.
* Increases critical thinking skills.

Botton- up, top-down, and interactive reading

Botton- up, top-down, and interactive reading are diferrent theotical models that describe howpeople process print.

Botton-up: Lower- level reading process, students start recognizing the fundamentals basics of letters and and sound recognition. It helps to recognize phonics and to practicethem.
Top-down: the reader uses background knowledge, makes perditions, and searches the text to confirm or reject the perditions that are made. Comprenhesion I sdierxted by the reader´s goals andexpectatios. It has 4 keys features highlight a literature- based approach to teaching reading

* It´s a literature- based approach
* Individual readers choosing what they want to read.
*Reading is integrated with writing.
* Emphasis is on constructing meaning.

Interactive reading: It is the best type of reading because it combines both of the last types.
