This is a descriptive Study and research about the use of supplementary materials in EFL classes of a public and a private schools specifically in 8th, 9th and 10th grades The research took place in one public high school in Carapungo and one private high school in Quito. The general approach of this study is both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis. Qualitative because it dealed with theobservations, impressions and interpretations of research. Quantitative: because it used measurement and statistical principles and models familiar to many natural and physical scientists. Information about the methodology used in public schools came from the Director of CRADEL (The English program from the Eduction dan Curlture Ministry of Ecuador).

Today, English as a ForeignLanguage teachers have various resources and aids like supplementary materials to help them in their teaching process. These materials make classes more interesting and motivating. The kinds of supplementary materials that the teacher can currently find are diverse. For example, there are visual, audio-visual, realia, websites, and others. Although some teachers make excellent use of these materials,there are some teachers that do not appropriately use the supplementary materials or even use them at all. One of the questions asked was, “If the teachers do use the materials, how pertinent, appropriate and of what quality are the materials.” For these reasons, the objectives of the present study are to obtain information from EFL classes in public and private high schools in Quito and Carapungo,to recognize the supplementary material used in the classes, evaluate it, explain it, and analyze the data in terms of pertinence (content), appropriateness (student’s needs), and quality. Additionally, this research will register the frequency and variety of the supplementary material observed during the classes. The biggest limitation for this study was the period of time for observations. Itwould be very interesting to observe an entire year teaching process from the beginning to the end, with the possibility to measure the impact that the supplementary materials used had over the student learning process in both public and private institutions.

This qualitative and quantitative study required the collection of data which was explored, analyzed, described and compared toidentify the supplementary materials used in English teaching classes in the public and private high school. The quantitative study was focused on determining the frequency with which these schools used supplementary materials during the classes observed. The qualitative analysis provides information about the pertinence, appropriateness and quality of the supplementary materials used. The data werecollected during the fall semester of 2010. Instruments: pre-stablished formats register in the UTPL Didactic guide . Surveys were unstructured, no formal reading the teachers and students point of view, attitudes, they were flexible for obtain information.Resources Sampling: defines the population from which one will draw the subjects and the procedure to be used to select these subjects
