During the 1970s there was a clear trend towards more conservative and less adventurous programme-making, in which tradition, continuityand nostalgia were the dominant themes of many genres.
Historical series had been largely neglected since the 1950s but twenty years later viewers looked for more comfort and reassurance intheir programmes, faced with the turbulence and uncertainty outside.
In a time of uncertainty and change, the monarchy was still respected as Britain´s more prestigious institution and this reached apeak in 1981 with re royal wedding of Prince Charles, which had an estimated worldwide audience of 500 million, a record at that time.
Royalty was still a rallying point for British society, which wasstill highly traditional and deferential. This was exploited in several drama series which romanticized the lives and times of past monarchs.
In the spite of the legal reforms to ensure equalopportunities for woman and ethnic groups in the 1960s and 1970s, in many popular television series, working woman were often shown as sexually provocative and available. The representation of immigrantgroups and individuals also suffered from stereotyping.
During the years of tory rule Britain became still more intolerant, divided and confrontational, width higher rates of unemployment,profile.php?id=753827172 aggressive cuts in public spending, tough and brutal policing.
In 1982 Brookside was set in Liverpool and was the first soup to deal with major social issues of unemployment, crime,homosexuality and AIDS.

As black and Asian ethnic groups became more established in society their presence was reflected in several crime series.
