Charlotte Bronte was the youngest daughter of an Anglican clergyman of Irish origin.
She and her sisters spent most of their life in isolation in a small village in Yorkshire, in NorthernEngland.
They were self-educated, reading their fathers’ books or newspapers.
As a way of expressing herself she began writing poems in 1846 and using the name of Charlotte Currer wrote Jane Eyrewhich was very successful.
Jane Eyre was a plain, strange, poor orphan who worked as a governess at Thornfield Hall where she falls in love with the rich owner Mr. Rochester who unfortunatelyhad his mad wife closed in a room in the attic.
Jane Is the heroine of the book because despite her meek appearance she is strong-minded and passionate.
One evening his wife sets fire to thehouse and wile Mr. Rochester tries to save her, he loses his sight.
Because of social standing Jane leaves the house but while she is away she hears him calling her name and she returns tohim.
…Her sister Emily was also a writer but only wrote one successful novel: WUTHERING HEIGHTS.
Written as a narration, she used two narrators: Nelly for the past events and Lockwood for theending.
The story is set on the bleak Yorkshire Moors and evolves between two houses: Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
The main characters are Heathcliff a foundling and Catherine thewell off daughter of the owner of Thrushcross Grange: Mr. Lockwood.
The story begins at the end and tells of Heathcliffs’ love and suffering.
The novel combines Romanticism and Realism and usesthe Gothic atmosphere which was popular at that time for example
dreams, nightmares supernatural.
It tells of a love almost like a Shakespearian tragedy, between different social standingsand how it is influenced by pressure of public opinion. The novel marked a departure from the observation of society towards the description of the individual








personality.
