the place in Mexico for
aquaculture opportunities

In Southern Baja California, the production of large volumes of shrimp in
large farming areas is not being sought, but rather the production of the
highest quality shrimp with innovative systems, with a certificate of origin
due to the fact that they come from an arid, safe andpathogen free
area, an important distinction for the world’s most demanding markets.

Shrimp farming at the world
scale is an activity that generates over 7 billion dollars, which
in Latin America contributes 20%
and which is in frank growth - of
about 10% annually – despite viral
outbreaks that have endangered the
production.
Southern BajaCalifornia is the
state with the country’s largest coastline (2,705 km of coasts, 23% of
the national total) and with a large
development potential. It is an arid
region which frankly depends on
fisheries and which is facing the
large expectation of applying aquaculture technologies for all stages
of fish, crustacean and mollusk farming, from the production of seedstock to fattening on farms.
TheState has a large natural
vocation for aquaculture. Its land is
not feasible of being developed for
large areas of agricultural farming
due to its arid nature and, therefore,
this industry has not proliferated.
It is the only state in the country
which has the capacity to provide
a sanitary certification for bodies
of water and which even has four
of these with sanitary certificateswhich are recognized by US FDA
and four more in process of being
certified. Therefore, its unspoiled
and greatly productive ocean is an
invitation and an opportunity for
the sustainable development of fish
farming.

En Baja California Sur no se busca la producción
de grandes volúmenes decamarón en grandes
áreas de cultivo, sino la producción de camarón
de altísima calidad con sistemas innovadores y
que puedan contar con certificado de origen por
provenir de una zona árida sana y libre de patógenos. Una distinción importante para los mercados
más exigentes del mundo.

Larval Maturation and
Breeding
Presently, there are three laboratoriesthat are producing shrimp
larvae: Acuacultores de la Paz S.A.
de C.V. (APSA), Acuacultura Mahr
S.A. de C.V. (ACUAMAHR) and
Acuacultores de la Península de
B.C., S.A. de C.V. (APBC). These
three laboratories have maturation
facilities and naupli produced there
are generally used for self-consumption. All three laboratories
together produce on average, some
265 million larvae per cycle andas
regards the market, they have 5 to 7
annual production cycles.
Larvae produced in these facilities are generally of an excellent
quality and pathogen free. Anyway,
producers analyze each of the lots
to make sure they are disease free,
specifically, WSSV free.

un gran potencial de desarrollo. Es una
región áridacon franca dependencia
de la pesca que se encuentra ante la
gran expectativa de la aplicación de
tecnologías acuícolas para el cultivo
de peces, crustáceos y moluscos en
todas sus etapas, desde la producción de semilla hasta su engorda en
granjas.
