Arquitectura Militar, Fuertes y Baluartes
 
Desde el s. XVI, después de la fundación de la Villa, se inició la construcción de edificios militares. Las construcciones de la primera etapa se modificaron o destruyeron con el tiempo; la segunda etapa comienza con la construcción de la muralla en 1686 y la tercera etapa a fines del s.XVII cuando se construyen los reductos y las baterías de costa.
La construcción de la muralla se dio como consecuencia del gran auge económico y comercial que surge en aquel tiempo. La muralla tenía 8 baluartes y cuarto puertas al exterior, y estaba reforzada por el fuerte de San Miguel con sus dos baterías, San Luis y San Fernando (hoy desaparecida); y el fuerte de San José el Alto con susbaterías San Lucas y San Matías
 

 
Baluarte de San Carlos
El baluarte  de san Carlos  tiene  sus inicios  en el siglo  XVII  su nombre se debe   al Rey  Carlos  II  de España , en el  año de  1676 fue  inaugurado por el entonces gobernador  Don Sandro  Fernández  de Angulo  , de la misma manera que los demás baluartes  presenta    una forma  pentagonal , en la actualidad es el único al que  sellega   através de una rampa  modificada  que desde la calle  nos lleva al primer nivel  , sus  robustas puertas  fueron elaboradas  con madera  las cuales invitan  a recorrer  el inmueble , en la parte de abajo esta el sótano se encuentran dos habitaciones donde probablemente    funcionaron como  prisiones   y de estas  han surgido  innumerables  historias  de  túneles y pasadizos secretos  , elsegundo nivel tiene  una terraza que alberga a dos potentes cañones  posados en sus  cureñas y  un campanario   en una de sus aristas .

En pasadas  épocas  las  crujías eran  utilizadas  como cuerpos de guardia , este  baluarte  tiene un aljibe y un silo llamado  purguero donde torturaban a los    prisioneros . Actualmente tiene albergado el titulo de la ciudad  que fue concedido  el 1 de...
