Speech Therapist

Speech therapy and language is the treatment for most children with speech and language learning. The speech disabilities refer to problems with the production of sounds, while problems with language learning difficulties are to combine words to express ideas.

= Slurred speech and language =

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association(American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, ASHA) classifies speech disorders as described below:

Articulation disorders - difficulty producing sounds in syllables and words incorrectly issue so that other people can not understand what the person is saying.

Disorders with speech fluency problems including stuttering - a condition where speech is interrupted by abnormal pauses, repetitions orprolonged sounds and syllables.

Resonance or voice disorders - including problems with the pitch, volume or quality of the voice. Distracts listeners from what's being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain to the child or make you feel uncomfortable when talking.

Dysphagia / oral feeding disorders - including difficulty eating or swallowing.
Language disorders can be receptive orexpressive:

Responsive disorders refer to difficulties in understanding or processing language.

Expressive disorders include difficulty combining words, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate.

-Specialties in speech therapy and speech-

Speech-language pathologists (Speech-Language Pathologists and SLPs in English), generally known as speechtherapists, are professionals educated in the study of human communication, its development and its disorders. These professionals have at least a master's degree and a state license in this field, as well as a certificate or clinical competence of the American Speech-Language-Hearing ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)).

In assessing the skills of speech, language,cognitive-communication and swallowing how children and adults, speech pathologists and speech can identify communication problems and the best way to treat them.

The speech therapist serving in joint disorders of language fluency problems, oral disorders, motor and speech and language disorders receptive and expressive.

Remedies
In speech therapy, the therapist will work with the appropriate childindividually, in small groups or directly in a classroom to overcome the difficulties that includes each particular disorder.

Therapists use a variety of strategies including:

Language intervention activities. In these exercises the Pathologist Speech and Language interact with a child playing and talking. The therapist may use pictures, books, objects or events to stimulate language development.The therapist also can pronounce words correctly and use as an example repetition exercises to strengthen speech and language mechanisms.

Articulation therapy. Joint exercises and sound production include the correct pronunciation of sounds and syllables by the therapist usually during play activities. The therapist will physically show the child how to make certain sounds like the sound of"r" and how to move the tongue to produce certain sounds.

Oral therapy and motor power. The therapist will use a variety of exercises, including facial massage, exercise and movement to the tongue, lips and jaw to strengthen mouth muscles. The therapist will also work with different food textures and temperatures to increase the child's oral health while eating and swallowing.


- When do Ineed therapy? -

Children may need speech therapy for a variety of reasons:

Hearing Problems
Delays cognitive (intellectual, the reasoning) or other developmental delays
Weak oral musculature
Birth defects such as cleft lip
Autism
Motor problems
Breathing problems (breathing disorders)
Swallowing disorders
Traumatic Brain Injury.
