Sentra 2013
It's been more than 6-and-a-half years since the Nissan Sentra compact sedan received a major overhaul. The small car landscape has changed dramaticallysince then, with hot new offerings emerging from all corners. So while the Sentra continues as one of Nissan's best-selling cars, it's been well past due for a redo. Nissan was keenly aware of this, and the all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra is part of a five-model assault designed to overhaul the automaker's lineup and battle the competition.

Fuel economy is a prime selling point in the compact segment,so Nissan reduced the new Sentra's weight and deployed a more efficient powertrain to boost the car's MPG numbers. The 2013 Sentra's chassis is some 150 pounds lighter than the outgoing car, despite increases in key dimensions. At 106.3 inches, the new Nissan compact's wheelbase is six-tenths of an inch longer, and overall length has grown by 2.3 inches to 182.1. It's not all bloat, however, asits height (0.6 inch shorter) and width (1.2 inches narrower) have been trimmed slightly, resulting in a smaller frontal area sculpted to improve aerodynamics. Nissan claims the changes reduced the Sentra's coefficient of drag from 0.34 to a slippery 0.29.

Up front, the 2013 Sentra adopts Nissan's new family-look trapezoidal front grille with a chrome surround and horizontal bars. Along with itstriangular wraparound headlights, it bears more than a passing resemblance to the mugs of the new Altima and Pathfinder. Its headlights come with standard LED running lights, which Nissan claims is a first for the segment. A new character line runs from the front fenders to the standard LED taillights just below the beltline, which is lower than the outgoing car in a nod to increasing visibility.Sportier-looking front and rear fascias and a rear spoiler are also available if you'd like your Sentra to stand out. Overall, Nissan believes the changes lend the 2013 Sentra a more aggressive stance and premium feel.

Escape 2013

Last year, the Ford Escape outsold the Honda CR-V andthe Toyota RAV4. In its final full year of production, Ford sold more than 250,000 examples of its small crossover, a feat made all the more remarkable—fleet sales and incentives notwithstanding—by the fact that all those Escapes were essentially the same vehicle that Ford introduced for 2001.
There were some cosmetic and mechanical updates along the way, but the Escape was getting old. Still, with such strong sales, Ford didn’t particularly need to completely remake the Escape. But it did just that. The 2013 Escape marks a complete departure from the crossover SUV it replaces. It was spawned from the company’s One Ford initiative that aims to offer the same or similar vehicles globally. This ’13 Escape, for example, will be sold as the Kuga in Europe.
Sporty and Creased Replaces Anodyneand Blocky
Upright, tall, and designed to imply truckishness, the previous Escape didn’t have a single aggressive, sporty line on its body. That is certainly not the case with the new model. It has sporty creases pressed into its sheetmetal, the windshield is splayed back, the roof is lower, and the front fascia looks vaguely threatening. It’s the same story inside. Simple, square, and uprighthave been replaced by complicated, multifaceted, and enveloping. Cabin materials now look and feel expensive, although we did notice that a few fits were askew in one of the early-build examples we drove.
The newness continues under the skin. The previous Escape’s Mazda-based platform is gone, replaced by a beefed-up version of Ford’s Focus architecture. Three four-cylinder engines are available,...
