Journal : Cat in the rain
Ernest Hemingway’s story, “Cat in the Rain”, narrates the event of an american couple in Italy on a rainy day, in where the “American girl” sees a catfrom the window of the hotel room on a rainy day and has the urge to rescue it. “I’m going down and get that kitty, the American wife said”(685). In this line the wife decides to rescue the cat anher husband shows certain lack of interest in the next line: “I’ll do it.” Her husband offered from the bed.” Her husband is not taking action at all, he is sitting on the bed reading. The wifedoesn’t accept his offer and goes to get the cat herself. The reader can imagine a marriage in which everything that the wife does, her husband its not interested but yet participates, by somewhat pretendingto make her wife believe the opposite. There is an important fact that the reader should not ignore and that is the male author, parting from this the gender criticism methodology is used to analyzethis short story better.
On her way out the hotel owner makes a courteus action towards her and she apreciates it: “…the hotel owner stood up and bowed to her as she passed the office.” (685). Sheaprecciates the hotel owner so much that she develops some kind of respect towars him. Another important point is while all this occurs, George, her husband, continues in their room reading withoutbothering himself to help his wife. When the wife comes out to rescue the cat: “With the maid holding the umbrella over her, she walked along the gravel path until she was under their window. The table wasthere, washed bright green in the rain, but the cat was gone.” (685) with great dissapointment she finds herself that the cat is not there. When she goes inside of the hotel: “American girl passedthe office, the padrone bowed from his desk. Something felt very small and tight inside of her.” (685) the American girl, with a tense face on her way to the room, the hotel owner sees her...
