The cervix is another name for the neck of the womb. The womb and cervix are part of a woman's reproductive system, which is made up of the
* Vagina* Womb, including the cervix
* Ovaries
How common cervical cancer is
Almost 3,400 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK each year. Overall, 2 out of every 100 cancers diagnosedin women (2%) are cervical cancers. But it is the most common cancer in women under 35 years old. Around 4 million women are invited for cervical screening each year in England.  About1 out of every 100 women screened have a moderate or high grade abnormality (1%). Early treatment can prevent these cervical changes developing into cancer.
CausesInfection with some types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the greatest risk factor for cervical cancer, followed by smoking.[8] Other risk factors include human immunodeficiency virus.[8] Not all of the causes of cervical cancer are known,however, and several other contributing factors have been implicated.[9]
Cervical cancer symptomsThe most common symptom of cervical cancer is bleeding from the vagina at times other than when you are having a period. You may have bleeding
*Between periods
* After or during sex
* At any time if you are past your menopause
Some women also have
* A vaginal discharge that smells unpleasant
* Discomfort or pain during sexTypes of treatment
