Challenging Conformity

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was an American poet who firmly opposed militarism, materialism, and sexual repression. He was a leading figure of the BeatGeneration in the 1950s. His poem “Howl” (1956) was one of the most significant products, in which he celebrates his fellow "angel-headed hipsters" and excoriates what he saw asthe destructive forces of capitalism and conformity in the United States. A San Francisco prosecutor argued that the poem contained "filthy, vulgar, obscene, and disgustinglanguage." The poem seemed especially outrageous in 1950s America because it depicted both heterosexual and homosexual sex at a time when sodomy laws made homosexual acts a crime inevery U.S. state. "Howl" reflected Ginsberg's own homosexuality and his relationships with a number of men, including Peter Orlovsky, his lifelong partner. His inspiration inthe 19th century American poet Walt Whitman made him write passionately about the promise (and betrayal) of American democracy, the central importance of erotic experience, andthe spiritual quest for the truth of everyday existence. Ginsberg was also a practicing Buddhist who studied Eastern religious disciplines extensively, and he took part indecades of non-violent political protest against everything from the Vietnam War to the War on Drugs.

Summarizing, his social and political activism was more focused in freedomof speech, Vietnam War protests, gay rights and association with NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association), and demystification of drugs.

The poem begins like this:"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
looking for an angry fix..."
