Gladiator

Gladiator is a 2000 historical film directed by Ridley Scott. The film was released in the United States and was credited for reviving films as Spartacus or Ben-Hur. The film wonmultiple awards, including Best Picture in the 73º Oscar Academy Awards.

The main character of the film is General Maximus characterize by Russell Crowe a much known Australian actor. The general is anupstanding Hispano-Roman soldier who fights in the Germania Campaign (AD 180). He is betrayed by Commodus son of Marco Aurelio Emperor, who murders his father when he learns that Maximus was choice tobe the next emperor. Maximus is turned slave and after the murder of his family, he vows for revenge. He became a gladiator and with nothing left to live for, he reached to the Roman Colosseum. Theemperor Commodus arranges a duel with him in the Colosseum but during the fight is killed by Maximus. At the end Maximus also died because a hidden wounded which was intentional provoked before thefight.

Gladiator was based on an original pitch by David Franzoni, who wrote the first draft in 1998. Franzoni was inspired by a novel of Daniel P. Mannix “Those About to Die” from 1958, and he choseto base his story on Commodus Emperor after reading the “Augustan History”. The film is really poor accurate to historical events. According to history Marco Aurelius died of a plague during hiscampaign in Germany, and wasn’t murdered by his son Commodus. The character of Maximus is fictional, although in some respects he resembles the historical figure of Narcissus, a wrestler who, according toancient sources strangled Commodus to death with the help of a prostitute slave. Commodus reigned for several years, unlike the brief period shown in the film, and when he was named emperor was about9 years old. It was impossible he could face Maximus in a fight in the Colosseum at that age.
