CHANGINGH ATTITUDES.
CHAPTER 1.
TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES.
THE PRIMARY TASK TEACHER IS TO PERMIT THE STUDENT TO LEARN.
CARL ROGERS.
Teachers and students spend a great deal of time in classroomsand often have very clear ideas about their different roles. Some of our ideas are based on our own experience of being learns at school and we may not have thought about it would be useful to changeany of the ways we think about what should and should not happening in our classrooms.
Think about the ideas you have about your role as a teacher. Look at the list below and tick any of the ideas youagree with. Put two ticks if you strongly agree.
*The teacher should decide what happens in the lesson.
*The teacher is in class to facilitate the students’ learning.
*It is important that teacherstays in control of the lesson.
*Students are in class to listen to the teacher and learn from her/him.
*The teacher needs to create an environment in which students can learn if they are ready to.*Students only learn when they when are actively involved in the lesson.
*The teacher should know the best way for the students to learn.
*Most learning takes place outside the classroom.
If you can, askanother teacher to tick the statements as well and compare your list. How far do your agree about the teacher’s role? Are you surprised by any of your assumptions?
It is clear that we have all kindsof set beliefs about our role, but students have them as well. You could ask them about what they think the teacher’s role is.
