The story starts with the silence but intimate walks of Mr. Enfield and Mr. Utterson. But the silence is once broken as the first gossip isintroduced by Mr. Enfield, talking about a horrid person and the door that they get to see. Nothing more is to talk about as they did not like gossiping so it seems to distance the reader from thewhole story. But later on, Mr. Utterson’s intrigue seems to give a parallelism to the reader’s curiosity, as we get to keep an eye too on that awkwardly described door: “The door, which was equipped withneither bell nor knocker, was blistered and distained.” The door looks like it is giving the reader a choice to keep on reading or to stop at this point. Just like you don’t want to know anymore butthe intrigue and curiosity tells you to keep reading. If the door is inviting the reader, this is one of the most mannered ways to invite a guest into the house, in this case, this story.
