History Essay: Charles I

The first great battle of the civil war was the battle of Edgehill, held in 1642. This happend because there was a problem with Charles I, the king of England, and theParliament. This could have been avoided if King Charles would have acted in a different way. He should have done as the Parliament said.
Everything started in 1625, when Charles startedquerreling with the Parliament. The first quarrel was because of taxes and his relations with Spain. The second quarrel was because of his favourite, the Duke of Buckingham. The third and last quarrelwas because the Parliament was still not happy with his government although Buckingham was dead. Because of this Charles decided to dismiss the Parliament and tried to govern alone (Eleven Years ofTyranny). Then, in 1940, he had to called Parliament to get money to raise an army to fight the Scots. Charles soon quarreld with it. Parliament insisted on discussing its grievances, before voting moneyfor the war, he dissolved it. This period was called The Short Parliament, because it lasted 22 days. Charles decided to go to war against the Scots. Not only the Scots could keep charles out ofScotland, but they also invaded northern England. The Scots agreed to return to Scotland , but only if Charles paid all the costs of their army as well as his. Six months later, charles called theParliament again. This period was called The Long Parliament because it lasted 13 years. It first met in November 1640. Charles could not dissolve it because he needed taxes to pay off the Scots. Members ofthe Parliament made it clear that they would not only vote taxes after he grievances had been settled. Charles wanted to keep as much power as he could, and also defend the church of England againstthe Puritans.
In conclusion, Charles was responsable of the start of The Civil War. If he would have acepted the Parliament ideas and wouldn’t liked being so powerful probably he would have...
