Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). Characterized by a vesicular rash as spots and blisters itch. The disease is common amongchildren, but has a proprietary variant of adults, herpes zoster, which is more serious and involves the reactivation of the virus later.
Symptoms: Usually patients do not have obvious symptoms that occurbefore the outbreak of the disease, which is accompanied by fever, fatigue, headache and loss of appetite. Symptoms begin between 10 and 21 days after infection. The most characteristic feature isthe appearance of redness and flat, ranging relief gradually taking to become blisters or vesicles. These causes extreme itching, break easily and form scabs that emerge and disappear in about twoweeks. The process extends to the sixth day of the disease.
The spots appear all over the body, especially on the trunk and scalp in successive outbreaks. Healthy children can develop up to 500 lesionsthat sometimes leave a permanent mark. In severe cases the spots extend the limbs and face. They can appear sore mouth, eyelids, rectum, vagina and airways.
TREATMENT
Chickenpox requires antiviraltherapy and symptomatic. Symptomatic therapy is done with painkillers, antihistamines and creams or lotions that soothe the itching. Its effect is palliative and temporary. They are also recommendedmoist compresses or warm baths to clean the wounds that occur when you scratch the blisters and prevent infection. In case of bacterial infection and antibiotics are given if serious complications ariseused antiviral drugs, such as acyclovir or interferon alfa.
