Introduction:Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the West is the best." And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritualpilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. Christopher McCandless was born February 12th 1968 in El Segundo, California to Walt McCandless and Wilhelmina ‘Billie’ Johnson. He had one youngersister named Carine. In 1976, he moved with his family to Virginia where he finished high-school.
At school, teachers noticed McCandless was unusually strong-willed. In adolescence he coupled this with an intense idealism and physical endurance.
He went on to graduate from Emory University in Atlanta in 1990, having majored in history and anthropology. After graduating college he began to travel,donating much of the money his family had given him for his Harvard college fund ($24,500US) to Oxfam America, a non-profit organization that creates solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice. He also destroyed every single ID and credit cards he had. He drove to Jakehill, Arizona where he abandoned and allowed his car to be washed away in a flash flood.
He got himself a new identity as‘Alexander Supertramp’. While he was hitching on the road he met Jan and Rainey, some sort of ‘hippie’ couple that had a RV van, and took him with them. They spent some days together, later Christopher abandoned them.
On September 10th, 1990 McCandless arrived to Eastern South Dakota, where he met Wayne Westerberg, a wheat farmer that taught him how to plow wheat and hired him to do it. Also, anotherwheat farmer gave him tips of how to preserve food of haunted animals. After working some weeks, Christopher quit to keep on traveling.
He managed to get to Arizona, where he traveled through the Grand Canyon’s rapids. On December 2nd, 1990 he crossed through Morelos Dam at the Mexican border and got to Santa Clara’s gulf. He didn’t have any ID so he couldn’t get back from México ‘legally’ sohe had to jump on a train’s car and arrives to L.A. He visited a shelter to get some sleep, but he regrets it and left. Somehow, he manages to get to Holy Moses, WA by hitchhiking.
On December 2nd, 1990 Christopher reunited with Jan and Rainey in Slab City, CA where he stayed a few weeks and met a 16 year old girl named Tracy T. who had some sort of ‘crush’ on him. Few days later, Jan gavehim a ride to Salton City ,CA where he began to hitchhike again.
At Salton City McCandless camped near Oh-My-God hot springs. On January 12th, 1992 he met Ron Franz while walking by the road who offered to give him a ride to his camping. Few days later Ron taught him how to engrave leather.
On March 22nd 1992, Ron caught Chris trying to leave secretly at 3am in the morning, so he took him tothe highway where he could catch a ride or a train without getting lost at night on the road. When they were saying goodbye, Ron offered Chris to adopt him, because Ron was the last member of his family since he didn’t had any children, but Chris told him they’ll talk about it when he came from Alaska.
