1.Define Science.
Is a systematic study of natural events and conditions.
2. Distinguish inquiry activities that could be considered scientific from those that are not
Scientific.
Scientific activities involve evidence, observations and measurements (empirical evidence). Those that are not scientific are person´s opinions or guesses.
3. Evaluate scientific explanation.
Provides adescription of how a process in nature occurs. It may be given by observations and measurements.
4. Describe how scientists use creativity in designing experiments.
They apply their imaginations to come up with new solutions.
5. Describe how scientists use creativity in explanations that fit evidence.
6. Define theory in science and contrast this definition with the way the term is used in everydaylife.
Is a system of ideas that explains many relates observations and is supported by a large body of evidence.
7. Define model in Science.
Is a representation of an object or a process that allows scientists to study something in greater detail.
8. Describe how a scientific theory or model may be revised to explain new observations or
evidence.
A well- supported explanation conducts to atheory. Most scientific theories are revised constantly in order to collect more information and make them more reliable.
9. Define law in science and contrast this definition with the way the term is used in everyday
life.
Is a law that should be taken to be universally applicable. It attempts to describe an observation in nature and applies to all of the different sciences.
A scientific lawis a theory that has been tested and is believed to be true
10. Give an example of a scientific law.
Law of conservation of mass: Mass cannot be created or destroyed only transformed.
Law of gravitational force
11. Differentiate between experiments and other scientific investigations.
The scientific experiments follow a pattern called scientific method.
12. Define experiment.
Is anorganized procedure to study something under controlled conditions.
13. Describe the relative benefits and limitations of experiments and other types of scientific
Investigations.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
gain insight into methods of instruction | subject to human error |
intuitive practice shaped by research | personal bias of researcher may intrude |
teachers have bias but can bereflective | sample may not be representative |
researcher can have control over variables | can produce artificial results |
humans perform experiments anyway | results may only apply to one situation and may be difficult to replicate |
can be combined with other research methods for rigor | groups may not be comparable |
use to determine what is best for population | human response can bedifficult to measure |
provides for greater transferability than anecdotal research | political pressure may skew results |

14. Define hypothesis, variable, observation, and data.
Hypothesis:is a testable idea or explanation that leads to scientific investigation.
Variable: is any factor that can change in a scientific investigation.
Independent variable: is the factorthat is deliberately manipulated
Dependent variable: changes as a result of manipulation of one or more independents variables.
Observation: is the process of obtaining information by using the sences.
Data: information gathered by observation or experimentation that can be used in calculating or reasoning.
15. Explain the major processes involved in conducting a scientific investigation.Defining a problem, forming a hypothesis, planning investigation, identifying variables, collecting data, interpreting data and drawing conclusions. (pag 30)
16. List some characteristics of good scientific investigations.
* Scientific observations should be well-documented and have supporting evidence.
* Experiments should be repeated or replicated (when a scientist not involved with the...
