“Oh dear,” said Mrs Gradgrind weakly, when she heard what had happened. “How could you do this, children? And with my poor head aching so badly. Why can´t you go and study a bit of … studysome… why can´t you go and study something?”
The children left and Mr Gradgrind turned to his friend. “I just can´t heads? Who gave them these ideas?”
“Wait a moment!” said Mr Bounderby. “Don´t youhave one of those circus children in the school?”
“Yes. Cecilia Jupe, by name,” replied Mr Gradgrind.
“Then send her away at once!” shouted Mr Bounderby.
“You are right! Wait while I get herfather´s address,” answered Mr Gradgrind, going upstairs. While Mr Bounderby was waiting, he opened the door of the children´s room.
“It´s all right, children,” he said. “I´ll make sure your father won´tbe angry with you. Well, Louisa, that´s worth a kiss, isn´t it?”
“You can take one, Mr Bounderby,” replied Louisa coldly. Five minutes after Mr Bounderby had gone; she was still rubbing her facewhere he had kissed her.
“What are you doing, Loo?” asked her brother, sullenly. “You´ll rub a hole in your face!”
“You can cut the piece out a knife, Tom, if you like,” she replied. “I won´t cry!”6.
“I am grateful for your kindness. I´ll borrow two pounds, and paying it back will be the sweetest work I´ve ever done, Madam.”
