Los Angeles is a place where many different cultures merge. Over time, all those different cultures have contributed to form the present city of Los Angeles, a city full of diversity in every single aspect that constitutes it. The people, the food, the language, the traditions, the different parts of the city, and the architecture have influences from all the different cultures that form thissociety. The way the different neighborhoods are organized, the materiality and the ornament used on the architecture of the city and how the buildings are made are aspects taken from the architecture of different periods of times and different cultures. The monolithic quality of the Stonehenge, the pyramids of Giza, the Mayan Temples, and the great Roman and Greek Cities; The Ornamentation used todecorate Asian and Indian Palaces, and Gothic Cathedrals; How the city of Machu Pichu, Peru, and the great Castles in Spain, France and Germany are build into the topography of the mountains, they are all characteristics take into account when creating the architecture of not only the city of Los Angeles, but of many parts of the world. In this Essay I want to discuss the influence of theArchitecture of Pre-Columbian Central America in the architecture of the modern city of Los Angeles. First of all I am going to discuss the similar organizational elements in the planning of the ancient pre-Columbian cities, specifically, the planning of Teotihuacan, to the organization of the city of Los Angeles; the use of orientation from the position of the sun. I want to explain the function andmeaning of Murals in the streets and the Churches of Los Angeles and how this form of art in architecture could have been influenced by the mural paintings of the temples of the Aztecs and the Mayans. Also I am going to discuss the relation between Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, and the Mayan temples by focusing on the ornamentation, the patterns used to decorate the facades and interiors ofthese buildings and the monolithic qualities of them.

The Aztecs and the Mayans were the greatest and most known Mesoamerican civilizations and the ones that contributed and influenced the most the creation of the new and modern civilizations of many parts of the world but especially in the American continent. Their traditions, their numerous astrological discoveries, but most important theirarchitectural knowledge is visibly captured in our modern cities and has been used to construct them. Los Angeles has great examples of the application of those architectural knowledge provided by ancient Mesoamerican civilization, examples that span from the use of material, and painting as modifiers of the perception of the architecture, to the form, the organization and the programming used onLos Angeles’ architecture. The Aztec and the Mayan civilizations however have several aspects that differentiates them one from the other. Even when they might share some traditions and building techniques and qualities, the symbols, the organization of the cities, the forms of their buildings, and the materials used to construct the them differ due to the location and the time in which thesecivilization were located. But the reason that these two civilizations have had such influence in the foundations of urban cities like Los Angeles is the fact that all the monumentality would not ever been possible without the quality of the social organization imposed by the political system which used the social discipline in the construction of the enormous edifications.
In actuality it isimpossible to date the exact beginning of the Mayan culture, and it will probably continue like that at least they find and inscription that gives us a clue of a chronology that tight the modern roots of such civilization.
