WAR Terrorizes our Union
Charleston harbor, South Carolina LNL

War breaks lose in Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina. Our honorable President Abraham Lincoln made the wise decision of resupplying fort Sumter in South Carolina, but unfortunately the confederacy did not seem to agree with this choice. In efforts ofbecoming their own independent nation the south refused to allow the federalist to enter their own territory. Confederate forces demand the surrender of fort Sumter and bombarded the fort into pieces.
This unfortunate event began when confederate President Jefferson Davis learned of Lincoln’s decision to resupply fort Sumter in South Carolina. Confederate President Davis realized that havingfederal shipments come into the fort would not benefit in the southern quest in becoming an independent nation. So Davis decided to capture fort Sumter before the shipment would arrive in efforts to avoid a battle at sea. Instructed by Davis, General Beauregard, leader of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, demanded the surrender of fort Sumter by April 12, 1861. Commander of the fort,Major Robert Anderson stood his ground and had the courage decision to refuse the demand. On April 12, 1861 the confederates opened fire on fort Sumter for several hours. On April 13, 1861 at 2:30pm Major Anderson surrendered after his troops did all they could. Confederate forces destroyed the fort after Major Anderson and his troops evacuated the fort.
Many events were leading up to this warlike the south states deciding to secede. After Abraham’s victory in the elections, the south breaks our countries’ union and chooses to become an independent nation. The south breaks free from our union if order to keep their slaves.
Another cause to this war is the issue of slavery. The south are in favor of owning slaves and the north are not, they believe in everyone being equal. The southare also anger that there salve are runaway to the north were they are they a free.
This war is a disgrace because a divided nation cannot stand. The south will never be able to function on its own. This war will only prove that we should keep our unity.

Sing Your Troubles Away

The slaves of the south are force to work the fields day in and day out. They sang songs to get throw theday. The songs sung by salves were also used as secret messages to help other slaves escape to the north. The songs were a key point of the Underground Railroad and brought any slaves to freedom in the north. This song “Follow the drinking gourd” is an example of the coded songs of the slaves.

Follow the drinking gourd

When the Sun comes back
And the first quail calls
Follow theDrinking Gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd

The riverbank makes a very good road.
The dead trees will show you the way.
Left foot, peg foot, travelling on,
Follow the Drinking Gourd.
The river ends between two hills
Follow the Drinking Gourd.
There’s another river on the other side
Follow the Drinking Gourd. When the great big river meets the little river
Follow the Drinking Gourd.
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd.
