-ed and –ing adjectives
-ing
Rule 1: add ing to most words
mail + ing = mailing
carry + ing =carrying
always keep the y before adding the ingending
Rule 2: if the word ends in e, drop the e and add ing
ride + ing = riding
take + ing = taking
Rule 3: if the word is short and ends with avowel/consonant, double the consonant and add ing
stop + ing = stopping
wrap + ing = wrapping
Special:
if a word has a double e, do not drop the second eSee + ing = seeing
change ie to y before adding ing
die + ing = dying
note: the word die means to pass away and the word dye means to color
dye + ing =dyeing
-ed
Verbs ending with "consonant-vowel-consonant"
When a verb ends with a consonant-vowel-consonant, and we put STRESS on this sound in speech, we doublethe last consonant. Then we add ed.
stop= stopp + ed = stopped
plan= plann + ed = planned
But if we don't put STRESS on this sound in speech, then we simplyadd ed.
open= open + ed = opened
visit= visit + ed =visited
listen =listen + ed = listened
happen= happen + ed = happened
Verbs ending with "e"
When averb ends with the letter e, we add only the letter d.
dance= dance + d = danced
smile = smile + d = smiled
Verbs Ending with "y"
When a verb ends with theletter y, and there is a consonant before it, the y changes into i. Then we add ed.
try=tri + ed=tried
cry=cri + ed =cried
study= studi + ed = studied
Whena verb ends with y, and there is a vowel before it, we simply add ed to the verb
stay= stay + ed = stayed
play =play + ed = plays
enjoy= enjoy + ed = enjoys
