Project Name
“Cooking with sun”
Needed identification problem (problem approach)
Around 2000 million people around the world are affected by the “wood crisis”, there is also adeficit of 1000 million m3 from tree falling per year. In Mexico, 25% of people cook with wood, according to data from INEGI.
To cook food in rural communities from Jalisco, wood is used, this process causes two problems: the first is related with health this method affects the respiratory system and eyes, the second is related with environment, because of the use of excessive amount of wood,also the hydrocarbons production which generate carbon dioxide.
The Cuvalles SIFE Team committed with health and development from people, also environment care promotes entrepreneurism, this project start in 2009.
Project preparation and approach (project vision)
Objective
Promote entrepreneur culture and alternative energy use, through the creation of sustainable enterprise in rural,urban and semi-urban communities using eco-kitchens like: Improved Lorena stove, coockers and solar kitchens. Using them we can help to improve quality life, family economy and protect the environment.
The project has three steps, which are:
First Step: Sensitization, Education and training
The use of alternative energy in home and business was promoted to reduce costs and ecologicalimpact. This has been done through giving courses and workshops to 148 families in Tizapán el Alto, Jalisco, where the importance of environment and family economy protection has been taken care.
The courses were:
Construction, use and handle of eco-kitchens, in this particular case was “Lorena Stove”. This was designed to use wood like energy source; the structure saves the use of biomass, inother words saves wood and up to 62.5% of combustion because the heat is concentrated. This kind of stove has two functions: Food preparing and as microwave function, this last function is available once the biomass has finished combustion, using the heat concentrated inside. This course impacted 33 families directly, 15 of them are already using at home.
The second course consisted in how to makesolar kitchens; in which they obtained the abilities to produce their own solar kitchens to make food at lower costs. This has impacted 65 families t and 50 of them are already using it to prepare their food.
The third course was about use alternative energy, this provided people a knowledge to create their own business and reduce costs. 100 families were directly impacted.
