Códice
Se denomina códice (del latín bloque de madera, libro) a un documento con el formato de los libros modernos, de páginas separadas, unidas juntas por una costura yencuadernadas. Aunque técnicamente cualquier libro moderno es un códice, este término se utiliza sólo para libros escritos a mano, manufacturado en el periodo que abarca desde finales de la Antigüedad Clásica hasta los inicios de la Edad Media.
Formato y materiales utilizados
El códice está conformado por un conjunto de hojas rectangulares de pergamino o de papiro (o alternando ambos materiales) que sedoblan formando cuadernillos para escribir sobre ellos, los cuales se protegen mediante una encuadernación. Dichos cuadernillos, al unirse a través de la costura, llegan a constituir el códice completo. Los cuadernillos se denominaban por los romanos duerniones, terniones, cuaterniones o quinterniones según el número de hojas contenidas antes de doblarlas. Como lo regular es que se formaran cuatro...
