Early Years:
Son of LutherTheophilus Powell and Maud Arial. Luther and Maud were Jamaicans who immigrated to the United States. Born in Harlem, Colin would later move to the Bronx. While living in the Bronx, Colin attendedpublic schools eventually graduating from Morris High as part of the class of 1954. After graduating from Morris High, Colin went on to attend the City College in New York. Colin had his introduction tothe military at the City College of New York. Without any direction in life, Colin decided to join the Reserve Officer's Training Course or ROTC. He was soon promoted to unit commander. This wasColin Powell's calling.
Overcoming Obstacles:
Mr. Powell had a tumultuous tenure as President Bush’s first-term secretary of state, when he was frequently undercut by Vice President Dick Cheney andDonald H. Rumsfeld, the secretary of defense, in the period before the Iraq war. Although Mr. Powell had major misgivings about the war and what he considered the inadequate number of troops, he notonly agreed to the invasion but also made the administration’s case for war in a presentation to the United Nations Security Council in February 2003.

Colin Powell was theFirst African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State, and the first, and so far the only, to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Also the author of a bestselling autobiography named "MyAmerican Journey".
