HISTORICAL TEXT ANALYSIS- ACT OF SUPREMACY (1534)
CLASIFICATION OF THE TEXT

The Act of Supremacy is a juridical text, because it was a promulgate law in this time, it is a church document, it was writing by Henry VIII in November of 1534 in England to the England society to change the church to their own church.

Henry VIII wasking in this time of the Tudor’s dynasty and this law has written with the intention to change the church and accept the divorce of the king.
This king was marriage with Catherine of Aragon during 23 years and he never had a male heir, in pre-Elizabethan England it was unacceptable, for this reason he wants another wife to give him a son and heir to the throne. In 1532 his mistress Anne Boleynbecame pregnant, and he needed the permission from the Pope to divorce of his wife and married with Anne, but Pope Clement relied Charles V for political support.
Charles V‘s aunt was Catherine of Aragon and he would not have his aunt’s honour violated by a divorce.
This negative provokes ire in Henry VIII who thought about a new church, and called Thomas Cranmer to grant him a divorce withCatherine. Cranmer was willing, thus Henry broke the English Church away from the “Universal” Roman Catholic Church, doing this he claimed himself (as king of England) as head of the Church of England, and England’s Parliament and ecclesiastical courts supported this break from Rome and the Pope and him doesn’t have any jurisdiction in the realm of England. The actual ministry of preaching and of thesacraments was left to the clergy, but all the powers of ecclesiastical jurisdiction were claimed by the sovereign.

The Act was produced in England and the context of the text is very influenced of the location because this law is for this country.

This text was firm by Henry VIII and he is a direct observer and writer of this law, it was written in it original language, English.
The Act ofSupremacy was produced in 1534 where the only intention of the author is create a new Church where he was the head of it and the State.
In this time the king’s intention is obtain all the power that he could. England in this time was very strong and an important country, this perfect situation of England and the power of the king makes possible this change and this act.
He doesn’t want keepunder the power of the Pope and this is the reason of this act, at the same time he wants obtain all the treasures and belongings of the monasteries to be richer in his reign.

It is a public document, and Henry VIII was so punished with the people who didn’t obey this law, the punishment is the death. So for imposition everybody in England must accept this law and forget the Christian religion, because their personal subjects were going persecute all the traitors with the reign, for example Thomas More was one of them.
