COMENTARIO ESCRITO DE DOS PRESENTACIONES
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
Introduction
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is the 5th full length film directed by Tarantino, after a 6 years break between Kill Bill and the film he previously directed, Jackie Brown. The film was originally conceived as just one film, but it was later divided into two instalments due to its running time of approximately four hours. The filmwas nominated for several awards (according to IMDB 13 wins & 42 nominations, including a golden globe), and was generally speaking, well acknowledged by critics:
* Quentin Tarantino's first film in six years, is pure evil bliss. It's not pulp fiction; it's pulped fiction, a crazed phantasmagoria of high craft, low taste and middlebrow swordplay.
Stephen Hunter – The Washington Post.Rating: 100% out of 100%.

* The film may be bloody, but it's also bloody gorgeous: a grandly fetishized epic of cinematic aggression. It's a tale of vengeance that hinges on Tarantino's love of ferocity as spectacle -- his immersion in action and exploitation, his addiction to the jazzy catharsis of junk-film kicks.
Owen Gleiberman – Entertaining Weekly . Rating: 91% out of 100%.

* Billre-establishes that Tarantino ranks with Boogie Nights' Paul Thomas Anderson as one of the few Hollywood filmmakers of the past 25 years with the stuff to win a lifetime achievement award. Like Hitchcock and few others, Tarantino can glean excitement out of someone walking across a room.
Mike Clark – USA Today. Rating 88% out of 100%.

Obviously, there were also some less favourable critics, since it virtually impossible for a director to please everyone:
* "Kill Bill: Volume 1," a 90-minute orgy of endless sword fights, multiple severed limbs and gushing blood. It boggles the mind that after six years of silence, all Tarantino has to offer is this garbage.
Mick LaSalle - San Francisco Chronicle. Rating 25% out of 100%.
Regardless of positive or negative criticism, this film wasa landmark in Tarantino’s career, as well as one of the most discussed and anticipated films of the year. Critics stated: “The speculation about the picture has been intense, with the big question being whether or not the boy wonder has fulfilled his promise and become a fully-fledged auteur genius. The simple answer is yes, and like his masterpiece Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill is a film that willundoubtedly stand up to several repeat viewings.”. It was so good that it left people mouth watering for Vol: 2. And they were both such a success that Kill Bill: Vol. 3 has been announced and it should be out in 2014.
Evaluation of the presentation in class
Student - Sonia Izquierdo
The presentation started with the student presenting all the technical specifications of the film (year, director, country, filmography, etc). It was very interesting the way that she connected the film with Tarantino’s particularities, like the casting of previously famous and now decaying actors, his fondness for 70’s “grindhouse cinema” (a catch-all term for movies that played in cheap US cinemas in the 1970s - Hong Kong martial arts flicks, Japanese samurai movies, blaxploitation films and spaghettiwesterns) etc. She talked about all of his influences and references, in a very complete manner. She also talked about the script, mentioning the flashbacks and flash forwards, the fragmentation of the film in chapters, the literal presentation of characters and their history, the mix between real scenes and anime (in the most sadistic scenes, to make them less strong and chocking), the use ofblack and white shots, always using clear technical language, all backed up with examples and explanations. She furthermore referred other curiosities and characteristics, like the fact that the film is an homage to Japanese culture, the portrayal of Tarantino’s fetishes on screen (foot fetish), the excessive use of blood, the camera plan from inside the trunk of the car, the open end that signifies...
