ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

A. Identification. Mention book, author and “époque”.

This text belong to the first chapter of the ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, that was writtenby Charles Lutwidge Dogsonin 1864 and published in 1865.


Lewis Carroll is an English writer of XIX century. The author has a very important contribution for Children’s literature genre andhis works and tales are still regarded as a reference for children nowadays. He composed numerous poems, several new works for children and books of logic puzzles and games.


The mostimportant works of Carroll are: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ where Carroll was criticized for his fantasy, absurdities, silly language… and, ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ (1872) where he combined ofsophisticated logic, social satire and pure fantasy would make the book a classic for kids and adults alike.


Lewis Carroll is placed in the Golden Age of Children’s Literature (1865-1911),during the Victorian Age in Britain, where the main ideals were: progress, the spirit didactic and moralistic, spirit of discovery and adventure, religious spirit, the pursuit of personal fulfillment,games as means of relaxation and fun.



B. Century and socio-cultural context in which it can be included

The Victorian Age is the name of the period of Queen Victoria’s reign. InEngland, the second half of the XIX century is considered as the Golden Age of Children’s Literature because at this time were published books inspired by fairy tales.


The Victorian Age was animportant moment for the childhood. It was a long of peace, prosperity, refined, sensibilities and national self-confidence.
